can someone help me simplify (1+3i)+(2-5i)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

the 1 and the 2 are 'like' terms; both are real numbers. Combine them. The 3I and the -5i are imaginary quantities. combine them. Combine these two results to obtain your final sum / answer.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

(1+3i)+(2-5i) 1+3i+2-5i ... remove the parenthesis 1+2+3i-5i ... flip the terms (1+2)+(3i-5i) ... then pair them up into 2 groups (of like terms) (3) + (-2i) ... combine like terms 3 - 2i So to sum things up, the basic idea is to combine like terms. 1 and 2 are like terms which add to 1+2 = 3. 3i and -5i are like terms which add to 3i+(-5i) = -2i

thank you two!
