Why do we use scientific notation, and when should we use it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Scientific notation is the way scientists easily handle very large numbers or very small numbers. For example, instead of writing 1000000, we write 1 x 10^6 ( or, 1/100 = 0.01 = 1 x 10^2). You should use it whenever you have a really big, or small numbers and you need to shorten it
