What happened in the south after the battle of gettisburg
After the Battle of Gettysburg, the town rebuilt their city. This was a very small city so it took a while to get the whole city rebuilt with the small number of people. After that the town threw a big celebration and invited Lincoln to speak. Before he spoke there was a college professor who spoke for 2 hours. Then it was Lincoln's turn and he only spoke for 2 minutes, but it was considered his most important and moving speech of his career. In the immediate aftermath of the battle, the South retreated to Virginia in good order, but the North was too exhausted to pursue it, missing an opportunity to force Lee's surrender, preventing the battle from being strategically decisive. Lee retired in good order to the sanctuary of Virginia. Meade could not mount an effective pursuit, and so lost a chance to destroy the enemy. As a consequence, the war dragged on another twenty-one (21) months.
