Trigonometry. Will medal and fan. (Pre-calculus)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Cos \theta = \frac{ 1 }{ 2 } , Sin \theta < 0; \] find Csc and Tan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know the answers, no idea how to get them.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

where is angle theta? which quadrant is it located in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

seems to be quadrant four.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now we use the identity cos^2 + sin^2 = 1 to find sine when cos(theta) = 1/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

square root of three over two?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's negative because we're told that sin(theta) < 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay since sin is y/r r=2 and y=square root of three and x is going to equal one based on the cos definition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so y = negative square root of three

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then I just use the definitions (csc=r/y and tan=y/x)
