Kidnapped from her home in Africa and sold into slavery, a young girl who was later named Phillis Wheatley defied all odds by becoming a famous poet. Few women and even fewer blacks were educated in 18th-century America. But Wheatley's intelligence and talent overcame the barriers that stood in her way. Wheatley was seven or eight when a slave trader put her on a ship bound for America. John Wheatley, a wealthy Boston tailor, bought her as a servant for his wife, who recognized the girl's intelligence and taught her to read and write. By age 13, she could read Latin and Greek and she was writing poems, often with religious themes. Wheatley's first published poem appeared in a Boston newspaper in 1770. In 1773, she was taken to England. There, she published a book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. It was the first book by an African American, slave or free. After she returned to Boston, Wheatley was given her freedom. She married John Peters, a free black. During the Revolution, Wheatley wrote a poem in honor of General George Washington, who invited her to his headquarters and praised her "poetical genius." But despite such praise, Wheatley was unable to earn a living. Deserted by her husband, she died in poverty at the age of 30.
