It was this powerful state that accepted Christianity in about 985 . Separation from the Western Church came in the 4th century ,originally through cultural and political factors . From the 5th century onwards differences of doctrine and ritual took formal effect in 1054 when the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople excommunicated each other . In 1965 the excommunication was abolished . Vladimir I - 980- 1015 , he was converted to Orthodox Christianity by Byzantine missionaries Ivan III , known as the `Great ` who ruled as grand duke from 1462 -1505 regarded himself and his successors as heirs to Byzantium . This resulted in Russia being dominated by the Orthodox Church and an all powerful Czar .
