OpenStudy (micahm):

Orange War do you want it too end if so let me know and i will do something about it

OpenStudy (micahm):

@e.mccormick

OpenStudy (micahm):

@tkhunny

OpenStudy (micahm):

@caitlinnr14

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Tell me what language OpenStudy is primarily written in.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Do you understand why the Orange War is persistent. Hmmm...?

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

why exactly was i tagged? i honestly don't care:P

OpenStudy (micahm):

well i can tell you this it better then it saying that openstudy will be back

OpenStudy (micahm):

but the orange war has to stop

OpenStudy (micahm):

i can tell you that when orange war is going on no one can't do homework or ask for help or email that will come in time and @Compassionate openstudy can be in many language

OpenStudy (micahm):

tell me then why do you let it happened

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That would require access to the code base and I seriously doubt that will happen easily. Some time ago, OpenStudy looked into doing a Hack-a-Thon to get some things dealt with. They ran into legal issues with exposing the code base. This killed the idea. Because of that, I doubt they will ever simply expose the code base to anyone without fully vetting their identity and capabilities. There have been a few programming interns. Most of them came from the school where the code was originally developed. I know of one that did not go there. Also, the people that have been hired to develop the site are doing some serious code revisions to take care of the Orange War and other issues. I doubt they will be taking on anyone new at a time when the code state is volatile.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Cool ^^^

OpenStudy (micahm):

the code can be broke anytime you want it and also there is a why to stop the orange war

OpenStudy (micahm):

you still have the same hackers on here from a year ago but you don't know why this happend if there's a code there is a back door that does not involve a code

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

As for, "tell me then why do you let it happened," well... Having a service fail for an esoteric problem that is hard to define is not something people let happen. It is a byproduct of how programming is done. Bugs can be in the programmer's code, the database program's code, any library's code, etc. This means that finding a solution can be a lot harder than you seem to be assuming that it would be.

OpenStudy (micahm):

yes i understand but you don't need a code a bug can have target reason but that does mean you can work around it you can

OpenStudy (micahm):

i can work around it as much as you can but when i tell you might think it dumb but it will work

OpenStudy (micahm):

it up to you if you want to know

OpenStudy (micahm):

so are you willing to hear me out

OpenStudy (micahm):

you can close openstudy one day every mouth on a Saturday the reason is cus you have too much student pasting site on here that have bugs your thought's

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That is not at all realistic.

OpenStudy (micahm):

people do paste site on here right

OpenStudy (micahm):

like tinychat which has hackers your thought's

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

You mean past links to other sites? A link, in of itself, does nothing. I am not sure what point you are trying to make and why you think that would have anything to do with the states of the notification services on the OpenStudy cluster.

OpenStudy (micahm):

links now and in the past that have hackers that are on them i know cus i almost call the police on him

OpenStudy (micahm):

and links has bug with them

OpenStudy (micahm):

your thoughts

OpenStudy (micahm):

you have 90% of hackers on this site

OpenStudy (micahm):

and more hackers = orange war= no site your thoughts

OpenStudy (kohai):

@micahm , I feel like you're trying to propose solutions when you don't even understand the platform. Your ideas are not going to work. The people who know what they're doing are working on this problem.

OpenStudy (micahm):

no i am for real

OpenStudy (micahm):

tell this if they know how to fix it then the orange war won't be this bad as it is now your thought's

OpenStudy (kohai):

Yes, saying we should stop links because they might have hackers will totally fix broken code. Smh. The "orange war" has been improving, actually, it's been happening less frequently. But saying things like, taking the site down on a day when everyone is doing homework, or stopping people from linking outside things will not fix broken code.

OpenStudy (micahm):

no some people i been with you for a year now and lately some student complain about so much they say swear words and no stop tinychat links only allow link's that will help student

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

>legal issues with exposing the code base such as what? o.o I never heard about that part.

OpenStudy (kohai):

But that DOESN'T fix the orange.

OpenStudy (kohai):

Linking things and swearing, although distracting and distasteful, have nothing to do with the broken code that is fixing the orange.

OpenStudy (micahm):

yes it will the OPS system i override

OpenStudy (kohai):

It will not.

OpenStudy (kohai):

Go try and convince someone that has a computer science degree that sending a link breaks a website.

OpenStudy (micahm):

then why do you have hackers on this site breaking opestundy secret codes

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

Well, if the code is just god-awful, then it could, but OS's code doesn't seem THAT bad.

OpenStudy (micahm):

i know what i am talking about there are kids who are 16 and 17 years old hacking peoples and site

OpenStudy (kohai):

How do you know that it's a hacker breaking the website? Is it so hard to consider that maybe when someone changes this section of the code, that another section of the code could break? If it was a hacker that could see and do anything, they would do more than just block smart scores.

OpenStudy (kohai):

How do you know?

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

Also, feel free to help the dev team once you learn Scala, HTML, Javascript, etc.

OpenStudy (micahm):

they can block people who did not block a person i 've seen a couple on this site

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

What are you talking about? o.o

OpenStudy (kohai):

I have no clue what he's even talking about. He's been insisting that swearing and posting tc links is causing the "orange war" -- absurd.

OpenStudy (kohai):

Evidently we have 90% hackers on this site smh

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

protip: it's not

OpenStudy (micahm):

for example if you were my fan and one day you were block but i did not block then you have be hack sooo they can use you account to do something you did not do or say

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

Uhhhhhh, no. If someone blocks you, then it automatically acts as if you have blocked them back, because that's how the system works.

OpenStudy (micahm):

yes but people can get around that

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

Getting hacked is a very rare occasion on OS.

OpenStudy (kohai):

No no @poopsiedoodle it must be hackers! Since, you know, 90% of the site of made up of hackers.

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

ill hak u if u dnt shutp

OpenStudy (micahm):

i've be block by a hacker

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

@kohai

OpenStudy (kohai):

@poopsiedoodle , DDoS me pls ;-;

OpenStudy (micahm):

do you know you have college student on this site don't you think that they know more and that they are going to get a degree

OpenStudy (kohai):

Think what you want, dude.

OpenStudy (micahm):

do you think they know how to hack without you knowing

OpenStudy (micahm):

your thoughts

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

If they hack you without you knowing, then that means that they're not doing anything, so they might as well have not been doing it. Either way, that's entirely irrelevant to OS's glitchy code. My thoughts.

OpenStudy (micahm):

you in the year 2014 any one can hack a site so easy

OpenStudy (micahm):

there have been days were i need help but the orange war cuse a problem you been having the orange war since 2013 your thought's

OpenStudy (micahm):

you did not fix it then

OpenStudy (micahm):

@e.mccormick i am not dumb if you don't care then this site would not exist with people trying to help

OpenStudy (micahm):

it now to act on it or re grate it in the feature

OpenStudy (micahm):

if i Owen this sit i be careful what people do on this site any of your thoughts

OpenStudy (micahm):

i been talking to students and they don't like it

OpenStudy (micahm):

i like this site but i not going to watch you burn it to the ground you thought's ............

OpenStudy (micahm):

@amistre64 what do you think

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The "links" that allowed hacks of user accounts by stealing a cookie where due to a bug in the \(\LaTeX\) code. That has been closed in two ways. Also, it was not the link to the other site that was the problem. It was allowing arbitrary code to e run with the authority of this site so it was able to copy a cookie and do a few other things. They changed the mode that JS runs in and rurned off the feature in the MathJax \(\LaTeX\) engine. All of 3 or 4 people used this. There are 18,252,865 users on OpenStudy. I don't know how they calculate that number, so I do not know if it accounts for duplicates. But 4 out of 10,000,000+ is not anywhere near 90%. When the Orange War happens the notifications service is crashing. It has done this for different reasons every time. Some have been for load. One was an accidental hack of the service that you can actually read about in posts on OS. One was a bad character construct that was improperly handled. One was never explained fully but was simply described as an odd set of circumstances caused by small issues in different parts of the code. So saying that the Orange War has not been fixed is incorrect. There are different Orange Wars with different causes.

OpenStudy (micahm):

@e.mccormick they do yourself a big favor and close openstudy once a mouth on Saturdays or you won't have this site working the right way

OpenStudy (micahm):

@Compassionate @e.mccormick @paki @Preetha then do yourself a big favor and close openstudy once a mouth on Saturdays or you won't have this site working the right way

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

As e.mc said earlier, that is entirely unrealistic. Plus, you don't have to take a website down to work on code.

OpenStudy (micahm):

no i mean you have to much data in this site if you don't like your going to burn this site down to the grown

OpenStudy (micahm):

@e.mccormick @Compassionate @paki @poopsiedoodle your going to have the orange war for ever it not going to go away if only you listen to me it your site if you want student to hate it do something about it or they are going to leave for ever..................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

You would need to know more about the code team and how development is done to understand why closing one day a month on the weekend is never going to happen. Even closing one day in the middle of the week is not a practical solution. It is a cluster. They can actually break one machine out of the cluster to do testing if they need to. Or they can duplicate everything on a local machine and work on it. None of that needs turning off the production servers to happen. I do agree that instability does lead to dissatisfaction. I just do not see your suggestion as remotely causing an improvement over having a team of people working 5 days a week on things.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

If I were a hacker, and didn't quite have enough information about the site I was trying to hack, I might try a friendly conversation that sounds like it is intended to help, but really is intended for someone with sufficient information to divulge the information I was missing.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@tkhunny They call that social engineering.
