OpenStudy (anonymous):

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.

Metaphors are comparisons that do not use like or as. Example: "The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas" -"The Highwayman" Alfred Noyes. Basically the metaphor says what something is. It does not say it is like something or comparable to something-it straight up tells you it is it. Noyes didn't say "The moon was like a ghostly galleon", instead he said the moon IS a ghostly galleon.
