True or False: The graphs of an inconsistent line are parallel.
True or False: The graphs of an independent system intersect at one point.
Answer the question: Is it possible for a system of equations to be both independent and inconsistent? Explain.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
help with whatever you can please :)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
when a system of equations is inconsistent, what do we know about the solutions?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
personally, not much
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what does inconsistent mean?

okay
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so, true for the first one?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
why true?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
because they never intersect and never make a point so it's 0 or no solution i guess
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
correct, they need to intersect to have a solution

#2?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
True or False: The graphs of an independent system intersect at one point.
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what is an independent system of equations?

ummmm

a system of equation with equal slopes but different y-intercepts?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
that would be inconsistent since you just formed 2 parallel lines
OpenStudy (anonymous):
rip
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
rip?

rest in peace

oh, am I missing something? lol
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i'm dead now because i got it wrong
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
oh gotcha lol
anyways, if we have an independent system, then we have 2 equations that are different and not parallel. So there is always exactly one solution with any independent system.
example:
y = 2x+3
y = 7x-2
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
An independent system is considered consistent because it has 1 solution. Any consistent system has 1 or more solutions.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so..true?

yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so..for the question
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i would say no, because an independent system intersects at one point while and inconsistent system has no point because it's parallel
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good. The two are complete opposites that can't happen at the same time.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
wooo
