In Iroquois villages, extended families known as clans lived together in large wooden structures called longhouses. Longhouses—some of which were as much as 150 feet long—were rectangular shelters the Iroquois built for protection from long, cold winters. Each clan was named for an animal or a bird, such as a turtle or hawk.
