1/6=0.166666666666666666666667 but i don't know how to simplify

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

I"d think the SIMPLIfied version would be the 1/6 though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jdoe0001 but i'm looking to "simplify" it in decimal form.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the '6's repeat forever, so you just have to round it somewhere to get an approximation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that i just want to know how to correctly do it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you did so already

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I would round at around 5 or 6 decimal places, so like 0.16667

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you don't need to have the number that big

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but how would i make sure i get a correct answer each time i do this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can use a calculator to confirm that 1/6 = 0.16667 approximately

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

or long division does the same (just taking a bit more time to check)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i get that part of it but how would i know where to round it in the future?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

often, the instructions will explicitly provide where to round (eg: round to the nearest tenth or hundredth)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if not, then I'd go 5 or 6 decimal places to get a pretty accurate decimal that also doesn't fill up the page or waste your time

Every pay period, Steven budgets of his paycheck for expenses, for savings, and the rest for recreation. His paycheck is $864.80. How much money does Steven put aside for recreation each pay period?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

steven budgets 7/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/6 for savings

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you can multiply 1/6 by his paycheck amount or 0.16667 by the paycheck amount

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the correct answer is 216.20 thats what my teacher told me

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh nvm I'm misreading

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i'm trying to figure out what i got wrong to make sure i on't do it again is all

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

when you multiply by 1/6, that's the same as dividing by 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
