OpenStudy (rainbow_dashie):

google

OpenStudy (kl0723):

if Kevin is x years old, and Luis is 4 years older then Kevin, then Luis is x+4 years older than Kevin, but he's also three times his age so that is 3x, so you have that 3x+(x+4)=0 solve for x and that's Kevin's age :P

OpenStudy (kl0723):

it looks weird lol but 3 times 1 is 3 so that is 3 times Kevin's age, and 3 is 4 units away from -1, so it is valid

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

its incorrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

L = 3K L = K + 4 so 3K = K + 4 subtract K from both sides 2K = 4 divide both sides by 2 K = 2 So Kevin is 2 years old (and Luis is 6 years, but that was not asked for)

OpenStudy (kl0723):

makes sense @abtster nice approach ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

W + 32 = 3W substract W from both sides 32 = 2W divide both sides by two 16 = W so William is 16 years of age

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you get it how you can convert the text in equations?

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

No, I have trouble creating the equations...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeh thatÅ› the tricky part Try to put the required answer in a symbol here: how old is William right now So William's age is required Call it W now what is told about that age In 32 years, something is the case In 32 years, William will be 32 years older than now, so W + 32 = something what is the case in 32 years He will be 3x as old as he is now we called his present age W, so something must be 3W Now we have the equation W + 32 = 3W

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

Stephanie is 4 times as old as Jessica and is also 21 years older than Jessica. How old is Jessica? S+21=4S :)!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

S =4J S = J + 21 So 4J = J +21 Hence 3J = 21 J = 7 S = 28 So Jessica is 7 years old

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry it was just the other way around as what you thought. Your eq. would lead to S is 7 years and that way, she cannot be 21 years older than Jessica if she is only 21 (unless the questionmaker is a scicic :-) )

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

okay so In 20 years, Ishaan will be 3 times as old as he is right now. How old is he right now? The equation would be 3*x=x+20 which would equal 10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, you got it If you read the statement with the found age in mind, you can check that you got the right answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just a sec, I'm answering another problem right now

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

I'm sure the equation will be.... set up different

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They ask for Stephanie's age Let S = Stephanies age They could have asked for Jessica's age Let J = Jessica's age Now Stephany is 28 years older than Jessica, so S = J +28 For the last three years, Jessica and Stephany have been friends --- Nice to know, but totally irrelevant for finding ages Nine years ago, Stephany was 5 times as old as Jessica S_nine_years_ago = 5J_nine_years_ago Nine years ago they were both 9 years younger So instead of J and S, we have J-9 and S-9 Hence S-9 = 5(J-9) So the equations that have to be solved, are S = J +28 S-9 = 5(J-9) The second eq can be simplified: S = 5J - 45 + 9 So S = 5J - 36 Using the first S = J +28 gives 5J - 36= J +28 Hence 4J = 64 or J = 16 We had S = J +28 S = 44 Stephany is 28 years older than Jessica - OK Nine years ago, Stephany was 5 times as old as Jessica 35 = 5*7 OK

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

I wish I could give you more than one medal xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's OK I hope you've gotten the hang of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the medal
