OpenStudy (anonymous):
asymptote, i think
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
the domian of sin and cos functions is all real numbers.. so could you elaborate on what you mean by undefined ? :)
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
undefined = 1/0
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
Do you agree that if we tried to graph those as triangles, it wouldn't work?
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
And even if cosine=x
1/0 is not a point.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
I think I got you now
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
sin(90) = opposite / hypotenuse = how to see this in triangle ?
thats the question right ?
OpenStudy (gorv):
well sin only give value between -1 and 1
OpenStudy (gorv):
and if angle id undefined thn its value will oscillate between -1 and 1
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
sort of . but you can't
nothing can be zero, thus it has to be a point.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):
but if cos=1/0
x=1/0
there is no such point.
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
If we wanted to graph what we had for cos.
It would be 1 adjacent and 0 hypotenuse
OpenStudy (gorv):
\[-1\le cosx \le 1\]
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
how.

OpenStudy (gorv):
it is not possible
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
are you simply basing it off of the unit circle?
OpenStudy (gorv):
u need to have 3 side to form a triangle
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
cos is undefined. how can it be defined by that restriction you placed gorv?
OpenStudy (gorv):
well its standard value

OpenStudy (karatechopper):
exactly what I'm saying.
Is undefined sin theta going to result in an undefined answer as well
OpenStudy (gorv):
cos give maximum value =1
and min value =-1
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
ok.
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
So?
OpenStudy (gorv):
wait

OpenStudy (karatechopper):
cos is still undefined.
OpenStudy (gorv):
u r saying one side of triangle =0??
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
thats not possible.
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
but thats how it shows.
OpenStudy (gorv):
hypotenuse=0 means there is one side of triangle =0

OpenStudy (karatechopper):
i understand zero can not be a side.
Thus I am saying the answer lies within a point
OpenStudy (gorv):
you tellme what is max value cos can give ??
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
we want to extend sin and cos beyond 90 degrees which is clearly not possible as you're saying if we live inside a triangle because you can never have two right triangles in a triangle
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
1 on a unit circle.
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
exactly! we extend the domain(/definition) of sin and cos to ALL real numbers using unit circle

OpenStudy (karatechopper):
why?
OpenStudy (gorv):
1/0 is outside the unit circle and cos can not go outside this circle
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
ok.
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
oh.
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
so we have to extend it.

OpenStudy (gorv):
u can use any value of theta it will give you value on or inside the unit circle
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
extend what ?
OpenStudy (gorv):
so cos is bounded to unit circle
OpenStudy (gorv):
we can not extend it
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
you said undefined is out of unit circle
cos can not go outside of unit circle
so is it our job to make it go outside?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):
So wouldn't the answer be undefined?!
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
i'm still lost a bit.
I'm sorry yall.
OpenStudy (gorv):
when 1 litre water bottle can hold only i litre of water how u can make it adjust more water
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
On unit circle, we define sin and cos like below :
sin = y coordinate
cos = x coordinate
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
you can't.

OpenStudy (gorv):
that is same with cos and sin
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
ok.
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
so for which specific angle are they undefined ?
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
let's say cos.
OpenStudy (gorv):
it will not take any value outside

cos theta
OpenStudy (gorv):
like you said 1/0
cos=1/0=base/hypotenuse
OpenStudy (gorv):
is it possible that hypotenuse =0???
OpenStudy (perl):
we dont have to use triangles to define cosx and sin x
OpenStudy (karatechopper):
for cos theta?!

no gorv its not.
OpenStudy (gorv):
yeahhh
OpenStudy (perl):
in geometry it doesnt make sense to ask what is cos (obtuse angle) , since cos theta is defined only for angles between 0 and 90 degrees
