I need help understanding this. Could someone walk me through it? Two students in your class, Hunter and Maggie, are disputing a function. Hunter says that for the function, between x = -2 and x = 2, the average rate of change is 0. Maggie says that for the function, between x = -2 and x = 2, the graph goes up through a turning point, and then back down. Explain how Hunter and Maggie can both be correct, using complete sentences.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

is simpler if we could see the graph you can always post a picture/file here by clicking on the [Attach File] blue button

OpenStudy (animelover98):

There is no picture. It is simply a word problem, sorry...

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmm what's an average rate of change anyway?

OpenStudy (animelover98):

The rate at which one quantity changes in regards to the other.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ok so let's see the graph goes more or lesss from -2 to 2 and Maggie says goes up and down thus |dw:1413583892474:dw| notice the 2 points "y" or the "rise" is at certain height when x = -2 and then "y" is at certain height again when x = 2 how much has "y" changed? or how much has "y" changed over those 4 points ?
