ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
subtract both the equations vertically
OpenStudy (anonymous):
What do I subtract from them?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
x + y = 5
x - 2y = 2
-------------
0 + 3y = 3
y = ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
How did you get 3y? I see how you get it if you add but how do you get it if you subtract?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
x + ` y` = 5
x - `2y` = 2
-------------
0 + `3y` = 3
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
`y` - - `2y`
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Wouldn't you have to add to get 3y?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
adding them both gives you `-y`
however its not useful because the x term wont disappear
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
we're subtracting because we want to kill x term so that we can solve y first

note that x-x = 0
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I get it! So it would be like 2 negatives=a positive?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
Exactly !
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok! So now what do you have?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
3y=3
-------
y=1??

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
Yup!
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
plug that y value in any of the given equations and solve x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok, so what next? Now that we have
?, 1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x+1 = 5
so x = 4??
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
Perfect !

Yeah! So the answer would be 4,1?
