OpenStudy (hannaha):

How do you make a factor tree for 39, somebody help me out!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its a tree, that splits into factors .... what are 2 factors of 39?

OpenStudy (hannaha):

1 and 13

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no, 1*13 is not 39

OpenStudy (hannaha):

no, 1 is a factor and 13 is a factor

OpenStudy (hannaha):

1 x 39 is 39 13 x 3 is 39

OpenStudy (amistre64):

when we factor a number, we split it into number that multiply together that will equal it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1 and 39 are factors but that doesnt really help us build the tree 3 and 13 are better

OpenStudy (hannaha):

so when you have the factors, which ones go first? say, if you have three factors which goes first?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a tree is built in binary steps |dw:1413922610529:dw| if 3 or 13 had factors that we could work with, then we would continue the tree

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the idea is to work it into smaller more workable parts until all thats left is prime factors

OpenStudy (amistre64):

say 50 factors into 2 and 25 25 factors into 5 and 5

OpenStudy (hannaha):

so 3 is a prime and 13 is a prime does that mean that the factor tree would be complete?

OpenStudy (hannaha):

sorry i meant *if not is

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep, when all thats left is primes .. theres nothing left to contribute to the tree

OpenStudy (hannaha):

alright, thanks the assignment says: 39 (blank) x (blank) so i would write 3 and 13 there??

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats the only workable factors to me

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1 and 39 really doesnt change the situation and we are left where we started

OpenStudy (hannaha):

lol true

OpenStudy (hannaha):

thanks so much!!! it was correct!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck

OpenStudy (hannaha):

;) same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@HannahA another thing is, that 1 actually isn't a prime (because primes have 2 divisors - 1 and themselves. 1 only has 1 divisor -> 1)

OpenStudy (hannaha):

ahh, i knew some said 1 wasn't prime but i never knew why

OpenStudy (hannaha):

thanks!

OpenStudy (hannaha):

you could say 1 has two factors 0 and itself but 0 isn't a factor is it?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

'1 and itself' isnt a good definition. the number 1 has issues with it that simply does not make it viable if we are to keep our definitions in math consistent. after all 1*1 = 1

OpenStudy (hannaha):

:D

OpenStudy (hannaha):

one question tho, if you have 78 and it has 7 factors, if you choose any they will all end up to be the same answer correct?

OpenStudy (hannaha):

this is regarding factor trees

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PrimeNumber.html "The number 1 is a special case which is considered neither prime nor composite ..." just in case you wanted a more indepth look at it all :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

78 = a times b pick any 2 integers that fit the bill
