when doing word problems, the y intercept of a function does not make sense??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what do you need explained?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so im doing this problem: the price you pay for a box of donuts varies linearly with the number of donuts in the box. for 5 donuts the price is 1.15$ and for 11 donuts it is 2.35$ the equation i get is f(x)= -2x+11.35

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-.2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does the 11.35 mean??? and how would i graph it? @hiitsme!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you get 11.35?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i plug in the (ind,dep)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

into f(x)=-.2x+b for b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let x= # donuts f(x)= # of pages left (# donuts, cost of donuts $) (5,1.5) (11,2.35)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, let's just say that is correct. So your y would then be 11.35. So that is where your first point goes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*utterly confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that at first, but it doesn't make any sense to the word problem...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you sure your f(x) is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)= price, my bad. thats from another question xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll be honest, I don't know how to do this problem because I did this kind of stuff last year. Good luck though! (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thnk i got it actually. lol. thanks anyway
