OpenStudy (anonymous):

which of the following will increase the resistance of a wire

OpenStudy (mstoldegon):

Looking for the following...

OpenStudy (zephyr141):

you can raise resistance by making the wire longer, or thicker, or even using a type of material that has a higher tendency to resist electron flow. my teacher also said that raising or lowering temperature to extremes increases resistivity as well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Resistance of a wire, say \[R_w=\rho\times\frac{L}{A}\]where: \(\rho\) is the resistivity of the material where wire is made, usually Copper \(L\) is the length of the wire \(A\) is the cross sectional area of the wire as can be seen, the resistance of the wire increases with the increase in length but inversely with the cross sectional area of the wire... those wire with higher gauge number has more resistance that those wire with lower gauge number having the same length...

OpenStudy (radar):

I'm sure that zephyr141 meant to type "thinner" rather than thicker.

OpenStudy (zephyr141):

um.. yes. (-__-:) well i guess i need to review again. and again.

OpenStudy (mstoldegon):

So, assuming that by "wire" the question implies that the wire is made of a typical metallic conductor (copper, aluminum, Tin, Zinc, etc.), the following will ALL increase the resistance of a wire: 1. Longer length 2. Smaller cross sectional area 3. Increasing temperature - Note that lowering the temperature will reduce the resistance of metal conductors down to the point where they maintain a constant resistance if the temperature is lowered further. This point is known as Residual Resistivity and varies with each metal element and alloys. Some metals (Al, Pb, Sn, and Zn), when lowered in temperature to near absolute zero, will transition to Superconductivity - this means that the material loses all resistance.
