Medals! Am I right? Peter the Great and Catherine the Great were examples of the positive uses of absolute monarchy. Do you think that they could have accomplished the same things in a constitutional monarchy?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

This is what I know about each: Peter the Great- Peter the Great, began trying to modernize Russia. He had traveled in Western Europe and seen new technologies and advancements. He returned to his country determined to make some of these changes, but he knew that he would need to be able to act without waiting for the approval of other government officials. Peter the Great increased the powers of the czar so that he could force the changes he wanted to make, and make them quickly. He reduced the power of the nobility as part of making this happen. He also increased the size of his army and made sure it was better trained. Peter the Great was an example of an absolute monarch who was actually beneficial for his country. Catherine the Great- Like Peter the Great, Catherine would be an absolute monarch, intent on modernizing her country. Catherine ruled as Empress of Russia for more than thirty years after her husband, Peter III, was murdered. However, while Peter the Great had used force, Catherine instituted reforms that improved Russian society without requiring her to wield force over the people. She modernized agriculture and improved education for the nobles and the middle class. Under her leadership, Russian gained territory and achieved military success. By the time she died in 1796, Catherine had brought Russia into the modern age, while retaining an absolute monarchy.

My answer: I think that Catherine the Great could have because she didn't force many things to happen, but Peter the Great did.

OpenStudy (kendricklamar2014):

My answer: I would have to say no, because i believe they were in two different time periods and laws change over time.
