Can someone help me?

OpenStudy (vianne):

Which word in the sentence is the direct object? I saw the new action movie last night at the theater. A. saw B. action C. I D. movie

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The direct object receives the action of the verb. It's easier to figure it out if you first identify the verb. So, which word in the sentence is a verb?

OpenStudy (vianne):

Could you explain what indirect objects are? :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Indirect objects tells to whom or for whom the action of the verb is being done. Not every sentence has an indirect object. There is no indirect object in your example. John gave a gift to Julie. Julie is the indirect object because she is the person to whom John is giving the gift. Gift is the direct object. It is receiving the action of the verb "gave."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*tell* to whom

OpenStudy (vianne):

So let's say for this example.. What is the indirect object in the sentence? Mr. Dillon did not buy Jack anything for his birthday. A. Mr. Dillon B. anything C. Jack D. birthday

OpenStudy (vianne):

Would Jack be the indirect object?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Sometime it helps to mentally insert either "to" or "for." So... Mr. Dillon did not buy *for* Jack anything for his birthday. I know that sounds silly, but it helps me to identify the I.O.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anything is the Direct Object. It receives the action of the verb buy.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Oh.. Does it always have to be a subject in order to be an I.O?

OpenStudy (vianne):

Because, most of the questions have a subject receiving the item/action.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Can you explain what Predicate Nominatives are? :P Here's an example. Which word in the sentence is the predicate nominative? One year ago, Jonathan became the captain of the football team. A. football B. year C. captain D. team

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. The I.O. and the subject are never the same. The subject performs the action of the verb. In my sentence, "John gave a gift to Julie," John performed the act, "gave."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The predicate nominative renames the subject.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Let's say.. "Joshua gave me a piece of paper." Would it be *me*?

OpenStudy (vianne):

So Captain would be the P.N?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes to Captain. In your sentence, "Joshua gave..." there is no predicate nominative.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Oh.....

OpenStudy (vianne):

Oh I meant "Joshua gave..." for I.O Sorry that I'm confusing you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, "me" is the I.O. Again, insert the word "to." So: Joshua gave *to* me a piece of paper.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Sounds weird! XD I'm stuck on this question, Which words in the sentence are the predicate nominatives? Australia is a country and a continent in the southern hemisphere. Choose all answers that are correct. A. country B. Australia C. continent D. hemisphere E. southern Now they want me to pick more than 1 answer. I chose A/C/D

OpenStudy (vianne):

Is it correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite. Only two words rename the subject.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Oh, so D isn't in then. Because southern is an adjective. Australia doesn't rename "Australia" Hemisphere I'm not completely sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It does sound weird to add "to" or "for," but you wouldn't actually speak or write that way. It's just to answer the question to or for whom so you can identify the I.O.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the Southern Hemisphere is a prepositional phrase. If you study a list of prepositions, those phrases become easier to identify.

OpenStudy (vianne):

Oh, didn't know that. o_o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to go. Hope it was helpful!

OpenStudy (vianne):

Awh k, I'll fan you, even though I still have more questions. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You'll be my first fan! Sorry I don't have more time. Good night!

OpenStudy (vianne):

'Night!

OpenStudy (vianne):

I know that you're sleeping @ShannonBobannon But.. I got a 92% on my quiz just because of you helping me! =) THANKYOU SOO MUCH! :)
