For the process of tossing two balanced coins, how can i do this process ? 1. are the events \at least one head shows" and \at least one tail shows" independent? Explain. 2. are the events in (1) mutually exclusive? Explain. 3. are the events \the rst coin shows heads" and \the second coin shows heads" independent? Explain. 4. are the events in (3) mutually exclusive? Explain

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

are you familiar with conditional probability ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many times do i have to toss the coins?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you're tossing one time

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the experiment is "tossing two coins one time"

1. are the events \at least one head shows" and \at least one tail shows" independent? Explain.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lets name the events : A : at least one head shows B : at least one tail shows

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Suppose you know that event A happened, can it affect the outcome of event B ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

for sure yes, because if you know that atleast one head is there, your chances for event B reduce greatly. So can we say that event B depends on event A ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

which is same as saying the events are NOT independnt

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

is that clear ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes thank you so much.. I really appreciate it. thx!!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :) 2. are the events in (1) mutually exclusive? Explain. what do you think ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

can event A and event B occur at the same time ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

when u toss two coins, can you have "atleast one head" and "at least one tail" at the same time ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

think a bit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

|dw:1414304398842:dw|

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

in above outcome, both events happened right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that outcome has event A because, the outcome has atleast one heads
