Round each number to the nearest hundredth. What is the best estimate for the sum of 34.719 51.626? A. 86.35 B. 86.34 C. 86.33 D. 85.35

OpenStudy (phi):

I would first add the two numbers (do not round) what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got 86.34500

OpenStudy (phi):

which digit is the the 100ths place ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (phi):

the 5 is in the thousandths place. it goes: tenths, hundreths, thousandths

OpenStudy (phi):

which digit is the the 100ths place ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (phi):

Round each number to the nearest hundredth. means now we have to decide whether to keep 86.34500 as 86.34 or 86.35 if the number to the right of the 4 (i.e. the thousandths place) is 5 or bigger we make the 4 a 5 (we make the 4 one bigger)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

86.35

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (phi):

If we had 86.34050 it would round to 86.34 (because the number next to the 4 is 0, and 0 is less than 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need help

Round each number to the nearest hundredth. What is the best estimate for the sum of 34.719 51.626? A. 86.35 B. 86.34 C. 86.33 D. 85.35

OpenStudy (gorv):

lol u got the right ans ..phi told u right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Round each number to the nearest whole number. What is the best estimate for the sum of 317.38 82.21? A. 410 B. 400 C. 399 D. 390

OpenStudy (anonymous):

round to the nearest whole number... anything to the left of the decimal is a whole number. 317.38 would then round to 317....because .38 rounds to 0....if it would have been greater or equal to .50, then you would have rounded up to 318. Now try and round 82.21 to the nearest whole number and what do you get ?

OpenStudy (gorv):

first add them

OpenStudy (gorv):

and thn round

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you do not have to...but you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can round before or you can round after

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can yall just tell meh

OpenStudy (gorv):

317.38=317 82.21=82 sum=399

OpenStudy (gorv):

but 317.38+82.21=399.59 ..we need to round this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

round it to what tenths ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh...the answers are different....my bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so gorv....do you HAVE to round after

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im lost

OpenStudy (gorv):

thatzz th difference ..loll that is my doubt also :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not sure of the answer...it is either 399 or 400 depending if you round before or after

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its 399

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is saying round EACH NUMBER...so I am thinking you round before giving you the answer of 399....but I am not 100% sure

OpenStudy (gorv):

me too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gorv do u think its 399?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok this site not helpful

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would have to disagree with you on that. I believe this site is very helpful...on 99% of the problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gorv do u think its 399

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@surjithayer ....what do you think....round before or after ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Round each number to the nearest tenth. What is the best estimate for the difference of 483.51 – 246.17? A. 230 B. 237.3 C. 237.4 D. 238

OpenStudy (anonymous):

483.51 --- the tenths place would be the number right after the decimal....the 5, and since the number after the 5 is smaller then 5, you would round down. So this number would be : 483.5 246.17 to the nearest tenths is 246.2 483.5 - 246.2 = 237.3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops...let me rephrase...483.51 -- since the number after the 5 is less then 5, you would keep it the same and not round up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe with these types of problems, you round before you add/subtract...not after

OpenStudy (anonymous):

duh

OpenStudy (phi):

First do the calculation, then round
