Which is the correct way to rewrite the following sentence? Patrick did not eat nothing for lunch.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Patrick never ate nothing for lunch. Patrick ate nothing for lunch. Patrick ate everything for lunch. Patrick ate something for lunch.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Patrick 'did not' 'ate nothing' for lunch. V V {didn't} {eat nothing}

OpenStudy (conqueror):

What can that mean if he didn't eat nothing for lunch?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

If he didn't eat nothing, that means he ate...what?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Do you understand? @beacon239

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nothing, no

OpenStudy (conqueror):

No. If he ate nothing the sentence would say 'Patrick ate nothing for lunch.'

OpenStudy (conqueror):

But the sentence says he DIDN'T EAT Nothing.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

So if the sentence says he didn't eat nothing that means the answer can't be that he ate nothing.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

So if he didn't eat nothing, does that mean he could've still eaten anything?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

@beacon239

OpenStudy (conqueror):

It seems you are confused because it would be the answer you chose if you got rid of 'did not' in the sentence.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

The opposite of didn't is did. The opposite of nothing is....??? @beacon239

OpenStudy (anonymous):

something?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get it now, Thanks a lot !

OpenStudy (conqueror):

You're welcome. :)
