so is 1/2 a = b then 2b = a. What property of equality is that? My choices are Addition property, division property, subtraction property, and multiplication property.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well what do you have to do to each side to get from: \[\frac{1}{2}a=b\] to \[a=2b\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not sure, that is my problem. :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh well let's go through the choices ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay! c;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so first addition...what do we have to add to b to make it 2b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we would add another b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! but did we add a b to the other side aka the side with the 1/2a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. we took one away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well actually no we added 1/2a right? Because 1/2a plus 1/2a = a. Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, i thought that if we halfed the a that equaled one b so in order to get one a we had to double the b's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's completely correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if we are "doubling" what operation are we doing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Multiplication... but i thought that it was division with the a...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hence why I am confused.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhh hmmm...let me think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you are saying to get from 1/2a to a. We are dividing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OHHH no!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so it would be mulitiplication?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! that's right! Because we are multiply both sides by 2 to get 1/2a --> a and b -->2b. Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*multiplying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wooo, thank you for actually explaining this to meee.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem, glad I could help :)
