OpenStudy (spicytaco1):

Why did J.R.R. Tolkien write The Hobbit and other stories of Middle-earth? A. He wanted to contribute to the oral tradition of the British Isles. B. He wanted to create a compelling work of nonfiction. C. He wanted to create an exciting fantasy for modern readers. D. He wanted to record the stories that had been told to him as a child.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd say C or D, but leaning more towards C. He had a lot of stories told to him as a child, but he didn't necessarily want to record them via published work.... He first published The Hobbit but was asked to write more after its gaining popularity so I'd say he wanted to create an exciting fantasy for modern readers :)
