If you multiply a number by six and then subtract negative ten, the difference is negative twenty-six. What is the number?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Let the number be x Multiply the number by 6 (6x) Then subtract -10 \(\large 6x - (-10)\) And that difference is -26...so \[\large 6x - (-10) = -26\]

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

So we can start simplifying by recognizing subtracting a negative number means \[\large 6x + 10 = -26\] Then just subtract 10 from both sides....and divide the result by 6 to get your 'x'
