i need help this year im taking alg 1 and im cyberschooled and im not learning much i need someone to help me and kinda walk me through how to solve these i dont need you to give me the answer i just need you to tell me how to solve i cause im so lost!!! 1. The table below shows the values of y for each value of x. X Y -1 0 1 -1 2 1 2 -2 Part A: Does the table represent a function? Justify your answer by using the values shown in the table (4 points)

OpenStudy (perl):

your table got discombobulated

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x y -1 0 1 -1 2 1 -2 -2

OpenStudy (perl):

ok i see

OpenStudy (perl):

so a function is basically a correspondance between two list of numbers, but in the first list you cannot have repeats

OpenStudy (perl):

in our example, the first list is X and the second list is Y

OpenStudy (perl):

X has no repeats , so its a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so you mean since none of the numbers repeat it is a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they are both a function im guessing?

OpenStudy (perl):

this is one function

OpenStudy (perl):

a function is a pairing up of values between two sets so you can think of the function as f = { (-1, 0) ( 1,-1) ... }

OpenStudy (perl):

there are a lot of words for function, pairing up, correspondance,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so for my answer i would basically just write yes because they are all pairs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry i just don't understand much because im not learning much in cyberschool and im really struggling

OpenStudy (perl):

not all pairs of numbers are functions , though

OpenStudy (perl):

{ ( 1,2) (1,3) } this is not a function, because x =1 is repeated

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so you mean that you cant have the same number anywhere in the x or y column for it to be a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like if you have a number repeat in the column its not a function

OpenStudy (perl):

on the X side, correct

OpenStudy (perl):

its ok to repeat on the Y side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh alright so then i write yes because none of the numbers on the x column repeat

OpenStudy (perl):

you can think of a function with some real world examples/ there is a function between the set of humans and the set of numbers (their age)

OpenStudy (perl):

every person has exactly one age. a person can't have two different ages

OpenStudy (perl):

so the function might be something like this { ( John , 17) (Tim, 27) , (Sarah, 31) , .. }

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wow that makes sense why can't my math teacher explain it like this

OpenStudy (perl):

i dont know.. :/

OpenStudy (perl):

keep tagging me because i will help other people . if you have a question. also if you close this question, your new question will go to the top

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay im gonna try and work on the rest of the parts to this question if i need help i'll tag you
