Why do u think William Wordsworth did not choose to use "expand" in his poem. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

I think the word "stretched" fits the tone of the poem more than "expand" because the speaker of the poem is a relaxed, gay/happy mood, and "stretched" supports that feeling. Usually, when you stretch, you're trying to relax, and you're not anxious about things. So, it's kind of a mood/tone decision on William Woodsworth's part.
