penicillin stops bacterial infection by preventing a reaction involved in the formation of cell walls. The reaction is catalysed by the enzyme transpeptidase. Penicillin resembles the substrate that binds to peptidase. It forms a permanent bond with the enzyme. Suggest how penicillin affects the action of transpeptidase, thereby killing bacteria.
