I need help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, distance is how far apart two thing are right? I'm going to give a simpler example and we are going to build from it, What is the distance between 6 and 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do subtract ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so the difference between 6 and 2 is for! Much easier when both numbers are positive. Now one way to think of this when one number is negative and one number is positive is how far is each from zero? So how far is -6 and 11 from 0 respectively?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol *four

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17 thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright! The others can be thought of in much the same way :). Also, if you know what absolute value is then this is a formula for calculating the distance between two numbers a and b: |a-b|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do I add b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if b is negative then you are subtracting a negative which is the same as adding a positive :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so add it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, add the positive version. In your case b is negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you add or subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait add

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use the formula I gave you, |a-b|=|-6-(-22)|=|22-6|=|16|=16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks
