is the relation {(-6,-2),(-2,6),(0,3),(3,5)} a function? Explain.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how does your material define a function?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

your course material should define a function for you in order for you to determine if this is a function or not. this is simply an application of the definition

OpenStudy (amistre64):

vertical line test ... is a good indicator of a function. a simple definition of a function is: for a given value of x, there is only one value of y that corresponds to it.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x y (-6,-2) (-2, 6) ( 0, 3) ( 3, 5) if we have duplicate x values, then we need to chk if they have the same y values. do we have any duplicate x values?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then by default, there is only one y value for any given x value.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes :) spose we had a different setup: x y (-6,-2) (-6, 6) ( 0, 3) ( 3, 5) notice that this gives us a duplicate x value ... we then compare the y values. are they the same y value?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

not quite. we see that x=-6 is duplicated. if i were to ask you what the y value is when x=-6 ... there is more than one answer. when x=-6 y = -2 and y=6

OpenStudy (amistre64):

:) good luck then
