I fun way to do it is to demonstrate with snacks :)

Google Property of Addition Proof or just count 6 objects and another 6 objects, put them beside each other, then recount them.

Addition is simply counting things together. I I I I I I I + I I I I I I I = I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 7 + 7 = 14
