You could use a calorimeter, or a temperature probe. This is usually for exothermic or endothermic reactions for a lab. For water, using a thermometer would be acceptable.

That's odd, she already has a thermometer so I don't see the need for a probe. You need water, something to contain the water, something to heat the water and something to measure the temperature - of which, the only missing item from the ones you listed is a heat source.
