this doesn't make any sense....i can't figure out what i'm doing wrong.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

theta is simply arctan(y/x).....so why is webwork having issue with this? is it webwork or did i do something?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

try entering pi+arctan(-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope. that's not correct either.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

enter the numerical value in radians

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried that. it doesn't work either.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

did u try 1.8925

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's right.....how did you get that? even my calculator says arctan (-3)=-1.249.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

add pi = 3.14 to that

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

calculators give you values between pi/2 and pi/2 we need to fix it by adding/subtracting pi based on the quadrant you're in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. i misread. thought you wanted to multiply pi to that. do i do that when arctan is negative?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

do that when u know that theta is not in (-pi/2, pi/2)
