In fact, in the reality perfect plane waves do not exist, such waves would have a unique propagation direction and infinite radiant intensity. However, to a very good degree of approximation we can treat the light from a small source as a plane wave if we are far enough away from the source. The light coming from a star represents a very good example of this.
