how much tension must a rope withstand if it is used to accelerate a 1210 kg car horizontally along a frictionless surface at 1.20 m/s

OpenStudy (mstoldegon):

I think you meant 1.20 m/^2 (or 1.20 m/s/s). The equation for Force due to the Acceleration of a Mass is F = M * A. You already have the M and the A, multiply them together remembering that the resulting Force (tension) value will be in Newtons (N = 1 kg * 1 m/s^2). Hint: If you want to estimate the answer, notice that the acceleration is about 20% higher than 1 m/s^2. Your answer should be about 20% larger than 1210 N. Trying to estimate a reasonable answer helps to determine if you went the wrong direction, got your signs reversed, etc.
