Have you ever wondered what bats do in the winter? The answer depends on what kind of bat you are talking about. Some bats migrate to a warmer climate when the temperature begins to drop. Other bats hibernate. Bats that migrate fly to warmer climates in the winter. They fly to places where they can find plenty of insects and fruit to eat. Some of these bats fly up to 800 miles to get from their homes in the U.S. to their homes in Mexico. Bats that hibernate stay in the same area year-round. Cave bats fly into caves and hibernate in groups of hundreds of bats. Having so many bats gathered together helps them stay warm all winter. When summer comes around, they live in trees and buildings. Tree bats hibernate in hollow trees during the winter. When the weather warms up, they live in roosts in trees. 1. Samuel is writing a summary of "Bats on Vacation." Which word in the passage should he highlight as being important for his summary? 800 miles hollow wondered :hibernate:migrate:

Corey was playing in the front yard with his friends Jimmy and Paul. They ran all over the yard and threw a baseball back and forth. Then, Jimmy saw something moving in the grass. "Guys, there's a snake in the yard! Come see," Jimmy called. Corey and Paul raced over. All three boys thought snakes were really cool. They each wanted a snake for a pet. "I'm going to get a box and put the snake in it. I can take him home," Jimmy said. Corey shook his head. "The snake is in my yard. I should get to keep it!" Just then, Corey's mom came outside. "Hi, boys, you ready for a snack?" "Mom, look what we found!" Corey said, picking up the snake. Corey's mom screamed, "Put that down! It's poisonous! Put it down now!" Corey dropped the snake, and the boys ran inside. They all looked at each other with relief. 2. Which of the following best summarizes the story? Three boys played outside in Corey's front yard while his mom was inside. Jimmy found a snake and tried to put it in a box and take it home. All of the boys wanted a snake for a pet. Jimmy and Corey argued over who should take a snake home. Jimmy wanted to take the snake home in a box. Corey wanted to keep the snake because it was in his yard. The snake was poisonous. Corey, Jimmy, and Paul were playing outside when they found a snake. As they argued who would take it home, Corey's mom yelled that the snake was poisonous. The boys ran inside. The wheels made a horrible sound. No wonder. The wagon belonged to Joey Kind down the block. He hadn't used it in years. The whole thing was a rusted mess. I had to borrow it. It was all for the war effort. And right now rattling along in the center of the wagon was Big Bertha. Big Bertha was Mom's iron statue that had a clock in her stomach. She'd been rusting away in the attic forever. Big Bertha was going to war. Mr. North at the junkyard would pay me a quarter and Bertha would be melted down into bullets. Poor Bertha. It was almost dark so I began to hurry. I chugged past Grandpa's house but I knew he wasn't there. He was at my house waiting for Dad to get home from work. Dad had news, that was all Mom would tell us, and we'd hear it over a late supper of salad greens and flounder in tomato sauce: greens we'd grown in Grandpa's garden, and flounder Grandpa and I had caught this morning. Poor flounder. Poor me for having to eat it with every single one of its skinny bones getting caught in my teeth. Someone was moving along the side of Grandpa's house. My mouth went dry. Here we were in the middle of a war. Suppose it was a spy? As his granddaughter, I thought it was my duty to find out. Quietly as I could, considering the squeak of the wheels, I shoved the wagon into a pile of bushes and tiptoed up the driveway. I went slowly, ready to tear back to the street and across the lawn to one of Grandpa's neighbors before the spy shot me. A pair of shadows. I clapped my hand to my mouth so I wouldn't make a sound. Then I realized I knew them both. One was Joey Kind's older brother, Mikey, and the other was a kid I had seen down at the beach flexing his muscles as if he were Charles Atlas, the weight lifter. His name was Tommy or Donny or...I wasn't sure, but I remembered my friend Lily Mollahan nudging me, asking, "Did you ever see such an idiot in your life?" adapted from Willow Run by Patricia Giff 1. Which statement best summarizes the passage? A girl is pulling a rusted wagon down the street. In the wagon is a statue that she calls Big Bertha. She is taking the statue to be melted down for the war effort. She walks by her grandpa's house with the statue. A young girl is collecting items for the war effort. She is taking a statue to the junk yard when she sees two people sneaking around her grandfather's house. It turns out the "spies" are two neighborhood boys. A girl is taking a statue to the junkyard. The man that works there is named Mr. North. He told all of the neighborhood kids he would pay for them to bring metal that he can melt down to make bullets for the war. A young girl is walking by her grandfather's house with a wagon. She is remembering what she had for dinner. She had salad from the garden and flounder from a nearby lake. She is thinking about the war.

The lamps now glitter down the street; Faintly sound the falling feet; And the blue even slowly falls About the garden trees and walls. Now in the falling of the gloom The red fire paints the empty room: And warmly on the roof it looks, And flickers on the back of books. Armies march by tower and spire Of cities blazing, in the fire; Till as I gaze with staring eyes, The armies fall, the lustre dies. Then once again the glow returns; Again the phantom city burns; And down the red-hot valley, lo! The phantom armies marching go! Blinking embers, tell me true Where are those armies marching to, And what the burning city is That crumbles in your furnaces! 2. Which is the best summary of this poem? The lamps are lit late at night. The speaker can still hear armies marching down the streets. The fire looks like red paint on the walls. Cities have burned down. When it seems like the city has fallen, then it starts to set on fire again. It burns like a ghost city. The speaker can see armies marching toward a burning city. He or she is not sure where they are going or which city the speaker can see. War does not really end. Armies fall and return as new armies or ghosts. Cities are burned and are built up to be burned again.
The speaker can see armies marching toward a burning city. He or she is not sure where they are going or which city the speaker can see.
Alexander Graham Bell won a United States patent for the telephone in 1876. A patent meant that no one else could claim that they had invented the telephone. Bell began working with telegraph machines. He wanted to send sound waves over a telegraph wire using a multi-reed system. It could be tuned like a harp. He did not have the equipment to experiment with his idea. Then Alexander met Thomas Watson. Watson was an electrical designer who became Alexander’s assistant. They found that only one reed was needed to make sounds. Together the men built a telegraph that could send sounds. The waves did not sound like voices yet. On March 7, 1876, Bell received the patent for his invention. Bell kept working on the telephone. On March 10 of the same year, Bell and Watson made the telephone work. Bell and Watson then improved the telephone. In August 1876, Bell sent a telegram to a town five miles away. People in the telegraph office could hear voices on the telephone. The next day, Bell strung a telephone wire across six miles. The message sent over the telephone wire could be heard clearly. This showed that the telephone worked over long distances. Bell’s invention became popular very quickly. By 1886, 150,000 people in the United States owned a telephone. Alexander Bell continued to invent for the rest of his life. The telephone remains the most important of his inventions. 3. Which of these best summarizes this passage? Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone made sending voice messages between people possible. Thomas Watson was an electrical designer who became Alexander Bell's assistant in creating the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone was delayed because he did not have the right tools. The telephone became known as Alexander Graham Bell's most important invention.

The world is filled with danger for creatures of small size or with soft bodies. Frogs, beetles, ants, and many sea creatures are easy food for many other animals. Predators hide everywhere and some animals have extreme ways to defend themselves. Exploding, squirting out poison liquid, and oozing slime, are a few of their strange habits that seem to work. Ant species around the world have developed different ways to prevent a predator attack. When Malaysian soldier ants feel threatened, they wait until their enemy gets close enough to die. Then the ants squeeze their abdomens and explode the glands on each side of their body. This releases a poisonous liquid, killing the predators. Unfortunately, since the ants also explode, they are dead, too. This is extreme self-defense! Sea cucumbers are strange soft-bodied sea animals that can change their bodies into a very liquid state to slip in between rock and hide. Once they are in the rocks, they change again and make their bodies very stiff. Because of the stiff bodies, a crab or other predator has a hard time pulling the sea cucumber out. If a sea turtle or large fish catches a sea cucumber, the sea cucumber squirts out its insides, almost turning itself completely inside out! Sea cucumber guts are full of poison and the predator gets a mouthful of it. Another example of extreme self-defense is the weird action of the horned lizard. Found in the deserts of the southwest United States, the horned lizard is colored to blend into its rocky, tan, desert home. Covered in spiky horns, it looks scary and dangerous to attack. It acts even scarier when a predator is brave enough to attack. Then the horned lizard squeezes its nose until the pressure makes blood vessels in its eyes burst open. The eyes spray blood on the surprised predator. Self-defense is common throughout the animal kingdom. Many behaviors are less extreme than the exploding ants, gut-spilling sea cucumber and bloody-eyed lizard. Even our pets will scratch with their claws, bite, and growl. These actions all serve the same purpose: to help the animal protect itself. 5. Which statement is the best summary of the passage? Several animals, like ants, sea cucumbers and horned lizards, have developed strange ways to react when they are threatened. Animals, like our pets, need to use their claws and teeth to survive attacks by wild predators. Animals, like the horned lizard, use many ways to avoid predators, like blending in and have frightening horns. Predators, like sea turtles and large fish, have learned not to attack animals that have developed self-defense behaviors.

I hope you don't mind my telling you a great deal about Roberta. The more I observe her, the more I notice all sorts of things about her. For instance, she seems oddly anxious to make other people happy. Also, she has the power of silent sympathy. That sounds rather dull, I know, but it's not so dull as it sounds. It just means that she is able to know that you are unhappy, and to love you extra on that account, without bothering you by telling you all the time how sorry she is for you. adapted from The Railway Children by E. Nesbit 7. Which sentence best summarizes the author's feelings about Roberta? The author thinks Roberta is quite boring. The author thinks Roberta is very kind. The author thinks Roberta is popular. Rosa Parks has been called the "mother of the civil rights movement." She is one of the most important people of the 20th century. In December of 1955, she refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. The bus driver had her arrested. She was sent to court. She was found guilty of breaking the law. Her act sparked a boycott of the bus system by blacks. Blacks refused to use the buses for more than a year. The boycott introduced the country to a man named Martin Luther King, Jr. People all over the country came to know King. Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court made segregation on city buses against the law. Over the next forty years, Rosa Parks helped make Americans aware of the history of the civil rights struggle. She earned many honors, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize. She is an example of courage and strength. She inspires all Americans to live free. 8. Which of the following best summarizes the story? Rosa Parks boycotted the bus system. The night air is filled with a strange whistling that seems to come from everywhere at once. The warm breeze carries the sound through the Caribbean island of Trinidad. It is a loud, persistent sound sometimes compared to ocean waves breaking on the sand. This is the call of a tiny tree frog living in the leaves of the tropical rainforest canopy. The frog has sandy brown skin with one thin, dark brown stripe running across its upper back and tan underbelly. No bigger than an adult human's thumb, the little frog makes a surprisingly loud call. The males are responsible for the noise. It is how they attract the female frogs. The Trinidad tree frogs begin singing shortly after sunset and get more vocal after a rain. They call throughout the rainy season, creating a lovely background sound for tourists visiting the island. The sound is easy to recognize but the frogs are so little they are hard to find. Many Trinidad visitors have spent the better part of an evening trying to track down the source of the sound only to give up in frustration. Most people do not suspect they are looking for such a small animal. People who spend more time on the island come to know the familiar evening voices and begin to notice differences among individual frog songs. Each little frog may have a slightly different pitch or a difference in rhythm. Individual frogs also stay in the same place night after night. That makes identifying a specific frog easier. This also works out well for the female frog trying to find her perfect mate. Thousands of tiny frogs calling out to each other create a lovely tropical music. And for any visitor, the musical sounds of Trinidad's charming tree frogs are a favorite memory. 1. Which detail from the passage should be included in the summary? April's parents were dog breeders and their kennels were often filled with a litter of puppies. April helped care for the dogs by bathing them and giving them the best food and water. April's class had also been learning how to care for animals in their science lessons, so she was thrilled when her teacher announced a field trip to an animal shelter. The shelter manager, Rachel, led the class into the kennel area where dogs and cats sat along opposite walls of the building. April was stunned by what she saw. Some dogs looked like they had been starved before coming to the shelter. "What happened to these dogs?" April asked. "These dogs are here because their owners did not care for them properly," Rachel replied. "We try to keep the animals healthy so they can go to good homes. If you know someone who wants to adopt a pet, please tell them about our shelter." April decided to take action and she printed flyers with information about the shelter. April's parents handed them out to people who bought their puppies. The following day April received permission to post a flyer at her school. That afternoon, April received a phone call at home. The woods were silent and still–creepy still. Jacob's eyes darted back and forth, sweat dripping from his forehead and scraping tracks in the dirt on his cheeks. His heart pounded in his ear. Jacob crouched low under a limestone outcrop. The rocks were coated with moss and seeped with moisture. All he could hear was the rhythmic drip of water against stone. He knew they were out there waiting for him. He knew they were watching. But where were they? Jacob eased forward slightly, surveying the landscape like a stalked animal. The situation was grim. Although his hiding place was secure, the path to the safe haven was fraught with danger. The thick woods would slow his movement and the few open areas would reveal his position. In between Jacob and home base were jagged rocks. His only chance at making it safely in would be to outrun them. He could run in a zigzag pattern among the tree trunks to slow their approach, but it would still be risky. Suddenly, the sharp snap of a branch breaking rang out behind him. Jacob took off like a shot, racing toward the clearing at the edge of the woods, feet slamming the ground and arms pumping wildly. He could hear voices and, judging by the sound, they were quickly closing the gap behind him. Jacob sped forward, keeping his eye on the light from the clearing. Tree roots leaped up to trip him and low-hanging branches snagged at his cheeks. He scrambled over boulders and twisted around the oak trunks, weaving his way through the forest. Jacob realized he was beaten at the moment 10 hands snatched at his t-shirt and yanked him to the hard, leaf-covered ground. Everyone began laughing as they tumbled in a heap to the ground. While tangled arms and legs began to unravel, it dawned on Jacob that his friends had conspired to startle him from his hiding place by snapping the branch. They had waited silently, within view of his hiding place, letting the tension build and they had been ready at the snap to tackle him from behind before he ever reached home base. He never had a chance this time. Jacob joined in the laughter. After all, he had consistently outwitted them all summer long and he knew his boasting had driven them to gang up on him. They had finally beaten Jacob at hide-and-seek. But, Jacob thought to himself, it had taken all of them to do it. 6. Which sentence is an important detail and should be included in the summary of this story? They had finally beaten Jacob at hide-and-seek. Jacob could hear his friends running close behind him. His name was Tommy or Donny or...I wasn't sure, but I remembered my friend Lily Mollahan nudging me, asking, "Did you ever see such an idiot in your life?" adapted from Willow Run by Patricia Giff 2. Which sentence is an important detail and should be included in the summary of this story? I clapped my hand to my mouth, so I wouldn't make a sound. As his granddaughter, I thought it was my duty to find out. Someone was moving along the side of Grandpa's house. He was at my house waiting for Dad to get home from work.

idk Fiona turned and stared at the red brick building. All last year, she had waited excitedly to pass fifth grade and start middle school. Now that day was here, and it took all her strength not to cry. This was not the school she planned to attend. Her family had moved from Florida to California over the summer, and she did not know a single person in her new town. Last night, her mother had given her some advice: "Honey, people will want to be your friend if they think you like them." "How am I supposed to show that?" Fiona asked. "I don't even know them." "A simple way to show interest is to give them a compliment. Try saying something like, 'Those are pretty earrings. Where did you get them?' You will be surprised how quickly a conversation starts," her mother replied. Fiona was doubtful. Fiona took a deep breath, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and walked up the steps. A tall boy skidded his mountain bike into the bike rack and called out, "Hey Todd! How was your summer?" "My parents took us camping. It was great!" Todd yelled back. "Julie, wait up! Who do you have for homeroom?" shouted a perky blond girl as she shoved past Fiona on the steps. Great, Fiona thought, it is worse than I thought. No one even notices me. Anxiety about having to sit alone in the cafeteria made her stomach do flips. Fiona hesitated at the doorway of her homeroom and warily eyed the scene. Kids acted like they all knew each other. She sighed and sat in her assigned desk. She took out a book and began to read. "Hey", a voice whispered from across the aisle. "I love that book! I read the whole series this summer in Indiana. I didn't think anybody here would read them. Which one is your favorite?" "I've only read the first two. So far, the second one is the best," Fiona whispered back. "I think so, too! I'll lend you the next one if you want. My name is Nicki," said the girl. Fiona replied, "I'm Fiona. I just moved here this summer." "Me, too!" Nicki said. "I was really worried about not knowing anybody. I lived in Indiana my whole life. My mom told me to make new friends by talking about books because I love to read. Hey, do you want to sit together at lunch?" Fiona laughed and felt relief wash over her. "Sure," she said. "And I like your earrings, Nicki. Where did you get them?" 3. Which detail from the passage should be included in the summary? Fiona turned and stared at the red brick building. She sighed and sat in her assigned desk. That could make her an outcast for the rest of the year. Fiona laughed and felt relief wash over her.

4. Which is the best summary of this poem? Cities have burned down. When it seems like the city has fallen, then it starts to set on fire again. It burns like a ghost city. The lamps are lit late at night. The speaker can still hear armies marching down the streets. The fire looks like red paint on the walls. The speaker can see armies marching toward a burning city. He or she is not sure where they are going or which city the speaker can see. War does not really end. Armies fall and return as new armies or ghosts. Cities are burned and are built up to be burned again
The speaker can see armies marching toward a burning city. He or she is not sure where they are going or which city the speaker can see.
