What is the best name for the molecule below? The molecule is made of five methylene groups (CH2) with two methyl groups (CH3) at each end of the carbon chain. 1-ethyl, 4-methyl butane heptane 6-methyl, pentane 1-propyle, 6 methyl, propane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Methane Ethane Propane Butane Pentane Hexane Heptane Octane

Thank you so much! But I'm really bad with chemistry so which one is that?

Please help!!!

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Two methyl groups at EACH end, or a methyl group at each of the two ends?

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

im pretty sure its heptane

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

i dont see how it would be any of the other options considering the description describes an alkane

mathslover (mathslover):

\(\color{blue}{\mathsf{CH_3}} \color{red}{\mathsf{- CH_2 - CH_2 - CH_2 - CH_2 - CH_2-}}\color{blue}{\mathsf{CH_3}}\) This is how it will look like. Note the linear chain, combining C, H and single bonds. This is clear that it is an Alkane. Moreover, there are 7 C atoms, so, it is heptane. (Hept stands for 7 Carbon atoms here)

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

1,5 dimethyl pentane as originally posited.

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

well I agree with you @NoelGreco but that isnt an answer choice

mathslover (mathslover):

I didn't get the point that why would it be 1,5 dimethyl pentane... !

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Well after reviewing it again it wouldnt be 1,5 dimethyl pentane it would be heptane but if it were carbon carbon double bonds that maybe 1,5 dimethyl pentene

mathslover (mathslover):

:)

OpenStudy (sreekar369):

conformly it is heptane(no doubt in tht)

OpenStudy (sreekar369):

by the longest chain rule we can say it as heptane
