in statistics how do you read these notation? P(| X − |3 < 25.0 )

OpenStudy (loser66):

do you mean P (|X -3| <25.0)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! my bad

OpenStudy (loser66):

ok, open the absolute value to get the normal form P( -25.0 < X -3 <25.0) = P( -22 .0 <X< 28.0) then solve as usual.

OpenStudy (loser66):

Now you can read it as: probability of variable X in the interval (-22, 28)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the bars just mean that 23 is both positive and negative? and the -3 means it gets subtracted from the desired mean if i understood right

OpenStudy (loser66):

yes, use algebra to solve the absolute value first.
