Positive and Negative Integers Problem!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really too sure where to even start on this porblem! Please help!

OpenStudy (loser66):

just counting: if x =1, then 0 is only one even before it, right? if x =3, then 0, 2 if x = 5, then 0, 2, 4 if x =7 then 0,2,4,6 ........ now compare: |dw:1415543972984:dw| you can see that \(\dfrac{x+1}{2}\) = the number corresponds to x.

OpenStudy (dan815):

is zero considered a positive even integer

OpenStudy (dan815):

if positive is not negative then, zero is positive but if by same definition negative is not positive them, zero is negative, so zero exists to be positive and negative but this cannot be because positive is not negative. therefore positive>0 negative<0 hence x-1 ---- 2

@bszent @Loser66 @dan815 please check the solution

OpenStudy (loser66):

Great!!

OpenStudy (loser66):

just one question: is 1 odd? if it is odd, why does your series starts at 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The series starts at 2 because we are asked to find the even numbers less than the given odd number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Loser66

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*even positive. 1 is not even, so we dont start with 1

OpenStudy (loser66):

Ok, depends on how we define 0, we get the result. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No Definition: A number is said to be positive if it is greater than 0. Definition: A number is said to be negative if it is less than 0. Clearly 0 is not greater than 0 or lesser than 0. Hence 0 is neither positive nor negative. @Loser66

OpenStudy (loser66):

ok, you are right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay so it's (x-1)/2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @bszent
