Probability Question. Check My Answer Please? Is it 17%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you show how you got 17%?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

P=event occurs/ Total number of outcomes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I added all of the numbers and I got 30. Then I took how many visted the museum but not the zoo which is 5 and I got 5/30 and then the answer is 16.666666666667%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But it says round your answer to the nearest tenth if needed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So im thinking you might have to round up to 20%, but dont take my word for it.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Be careful, it says "given the person did not visit the zoo"

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

|dw:1415663053278:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that means you can toss out the first row (ignore it completely)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you only care about the people who didn't visit the zoo

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

|dw:1415663221003:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so yea he is right he did 5/30

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

5/30 is not correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would it be 5/7 then?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But wouldnt that be odds then?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

5 people visited the museum and not the zoo out of 7 people who didn't visit the zoo

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

odd would be 5:2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you have to express 5/7 as a percentage though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i realized that just now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5/7=71.428571428571%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but isn't probability equal to number of event occurs over the total number of outcomes?

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

there are only 7 outcomes (that did not go to the zoo)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You start out with 30 people, but that "given" statement reduces the population down to 7.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, yea
