Which of the following statements best describes the graph of x + y = 2? It is a line which intersects the x-axis at (2, 2). It is a line which intersects the y-axis at (2, 2). It is a line joining the points whose x and y-coordinates add up to 2. It is a line joining the points whose x and y-coordinates add up to 4.

hero (hero):

@sara_lee101 which do you believe is correct?

hero (hero):

But also explain why you think your choice is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um, Following my gut, I would say it must be B, as when you plug the equation in to a graph, the y intersects the point

hero (hero):

The point (2,2) means that x = 2 and y = 2. The equation is x + y = 2. In other words, in order for B to be correct, the values of x and y must add to get 2. Do you think this is possible given the coordinate values for B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, not really..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was also thinking it could be C, but I wasn't too sure..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

However, now that you explained the whole situation to me, I might not think its is C, or maybe it would be D, as the numbers cannot equal 2...

hero (hero):

Try to reason with yourself between choices C and D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, as I looked at the graph even closer, I think it must be C... As the line intersects between the two 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one on the y axis and the other on the x axis

hero (hero):

x + y = 2 means that coordinates of every point on the line must add to get 2. Points such as (2,0), (0,2), (1,1), (-1,3), (3, -1), (4, -2), (-2, 4), (-4, 6) are all on the line.

Oh ok...
