-4x^2-30x-14 Help! Factor completely

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2(2x^2+15x+7) it is not factorable b/c 7 cannot be divided by any numbers other than 7 or 1 so use the quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it is prime?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is -2(x+7)(2x+1) a correct answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No the equation can be factored. -2(2x^2 + 15x + 7) can be factored further. It can be factored to -2(2x + 1)(x + 7)

Can you show the steps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so lets look at 2x^2 + 15x + 7 Break 15x into 14x and x so that we can factor. 2x^2 + 14x + x + 7 2x^2 + x + 14x + 7 x(2x + 1) + 7(2x + 1) Since there are two same brackets, they combine to form one. The other bracket is formed from x and +7. Answer: (x + 7)(2x + 1) Put the -2 -2(x+7)(2x+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You just break the middle x value so that you can factor the equation to get two of the same bracket, then afterwards what is left on the outside is the second bracket
