Why does Odysseus blind Polyphemus rather than kill him? A. Teiresias and Circe have advised him to do so. B. Odysseus takes pity on the Cyclops. C. Only Polyphemus can move the boulder blocking the cave’s entrance. D. Odysseus knows that killing Polyphemus will anger Poseidon.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

impossible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol... which one ? Im so confused :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's C, i promise

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Odysseus needed Polyphemus to move the giant boulder-door from the entrance of the cave. If he had killed Polyphemus, Odysseus and his men would have been trapped inside the cave.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no polyphemus was son of poseeidon if he was killed poseidon would have got angry

OpenStudy (m3ga-bit3):

i think it is C but it could also b D because cyclops r considered sons of posieden

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah DDDDDDDDDDDD

OpenStudy (m3ga-bit3):

lol@sumamta

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about the bigger problem, don't be tricked by another answer. If Odysseus killed Polyphemus, he would have been trapped, I don't think angering Poseidon was that big of a worry in his situation.

OpenStudy (m3ga-bit3):

truuuuuuu so DDDDDDDDDDD:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Odysseus and his crew do not kill Polyphemus because the cyclops had blocked the exit of the cave with a large boulder. If Odysseus had killed Polyphemus, he and his men would not have not had the strength to move the boulder and therefore, they would have been trapped in that cave. (A son of Posiedon) Odysseus had enough trouble simply blinding him without attempting to physically kill him (which in any case might have alerted the other Cyclops living nearby).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I reconfirmed my answer with my friend

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually @racheldilich was originally right. the correct answer is C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Things took a serious turn for the worse when Odysseus's ships landed on an island inhabited by the Cyclopes — one-eyed, man-eating Giants. The Cyclops Polyphemus was Poseidon's son. When Odysseus and twelve of his men explored the island, they found a cave with a large amount of food stored in the back. Odysseus and his men settled in to wait for the cave's owner to return to ask him to share his food. But the cave's owner was Polyphemus. Around dusk, Polyphemus returned with his flock of sheep. As was his routine, he drove the flock into the cave and blocked the entrance with a massive boulder. Odysseus asked the Cyclops for the hospitality due to him by the laws of the gods. Polyphemus answered Odysseus's request by seizing two of his men and devouring them. The men could not kill Polyphemus because he was the only one strong enough to move the boulder away from the cave's entrance. In the morning, Polyphemus ate two more of Odysseus's men and then drove his flock outside. He then replaced the boulder, keeping the men trapped inside the cave, awaiting their turn to become a meal for the Cyclops. But clever Odysseus devised a plan." http://www.netplaces.com/classical-mythology/the-leading-men-of-classical-mythology/odysseus.htm
