OMg I just learned this. So if you want a detailed explanation of everything that happens in this time period I recommend looking at CRASHCOURSE and going under the Mercantism Revolution in the United States History. Railroads were not always used for transportation, so please excuse that answer, though they were beneficial, they weren't highly considered a method of traveling. It actually transported goods and was able to connect locales better than it would by land. It took twice the amount of money to go across land by wagon or foot, but with trains, the economy boosted as well was producing a fast paced shipment and growing industrial market. Steamboats however, and as well as canals, were beneficial in reducing water pollution, but often were a means of transportation just to water way towns as well as mainly just a use of travel and not as highly efficient as the railway.
