A collection of quarters and nickels is worth $14.80. There are 88 coins in all. how many of each coin are there? __quarters __nickels

OpenStudy (perl):

First thing I would do is label the unknowns x = # of quarters y = # of nickels

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have done that. now whats next?

OpenStudy (perl):

it says there is a total of 88 coins

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup.

OpenStudy (perl):

this means x + y = 88

OpenStudy (perl):

any questions so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.

OpenStudy (perl):

now it also says, the total money is 14.80

OpenStudy (perl):

so you can multiply the number of quarters by 0.25 , and the number of nickels by 0.5

OpenStudy (perl):

.25x + .05y = 14.40

OpenStudy (perl):

1 quarter = $0.25 1 nickel = $0.05

OpenStudy (perl):

now can you solve it, you have two equations in two unknowns

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. i think im starting to understand.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!
