OpenStudy (bunnyzrockgirl):

What was the Continental Congress? What were three key actions of the Continental Congress?

OpenStudy (integritylost):

The first Continental Congress met in Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia, from September 5, to October 26, 1774. Carpenter's Hall was also the seat of the Pennsylvania Congress. All of the colonies except Georgia sent delegates.

You may have heard of the American Revolution. The colonies wanted to present a united front to the British in addressing their complaints. In 1774 they got some delegates together and formed a congress for the North American colonies. Hence, the name. Fighting started soon thereafter. About spring of 1776 the congress decided they ought to officially tell Britain that they were breaking up. They had already sent George Washington to lead volunteers up in Boston. And they were doing a lot of national government stuff, so it seemed a good idea. Thomas Jefferson was a representative from Virginia in the congress. He could write and wasn't doing much else. The Congress asked Ben Franklin, John Adams and some other guys to help Jefferson. But they were really busy with the war so Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independance, the other guys made some changes and the whole congress voted for it. So they were officially a country, sorta. The congress got back to work winning the war. They supported Washington and the Army as best they could. After Washington won the war, some people thought he should be king. He said no thanks. So the Continental Congressmen looked at each other and said."I guess we're still in charge." They made some changes to the way they governed and called it the Articles of Confederation. They added a president to the government. But that job didn't have much power. None of the guys who were president with the Articles of Confederation are on dollar bills. Before they gave up power in 1789, they did one more thing that was kinda big. The Northwest ordinance of 1787 set up some basic rules for areas to become new states. And it set aside land for schools. It was replaced by the North West Ordinance of 1789 when the US Constitution took the place of the Articles. But it was the same ideas. The Continental Congress was the government of the US for about 13 years. They did a lot of stuff.
