Can someone help me understand a little bit more about cells?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hi!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So how can i help you today ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just i'm really bad at like science and cells so i jest need like help to understand it better because im getting homework that has to do with cells but i just can't really do it since cells is like the most complicated thing (to me at least) and the endosymbiosis theory

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So have you read about it in your book ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but for some reason like it doesn't go through my head its like im just reading cause i have to read im not understanding... and i really want to understand

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Ok, so do on ething, ask me the thing which is not going through your head....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OKay so basically what is a cell and what is it's function? and how is mitochondria got into the Eukaryota cell because i know it was like a cell it's cell of at least that's what they thought and what is each organelle and what is like their function what does it do to help out the cell? i think that's basically it for now but i might have more questions later once we get specific

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Ok, first of all just know one thing that cell as a topic is very easy........

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ok ? So remove everything from your mind....

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now, do you know about atom ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

It is the smallest functional unit of an element...similarly in an analogous way, cell is the smallest functional unit of a living being. Anything less than a cell can't be living.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ok ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay and sorry my connection got messed up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what is smaller a cell or atom?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

An atom.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay sorry

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Cells are made up of many atoms.....actually the largest cell is ostrich egg, you can see it with your naked eyes.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Ok, now let's proceed. Cells are of two types....The one which evolved earlier and are primitive are called Prokaryotic cells and those which evolved later and are more complex are called as Eukaryotic cells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so i know the eukaryotic cells is for animals and plants, is prokaryotic for bacteria?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes, now every cell which do not have a membrane bound nucleus is grouped under prokaryotic cells. Like bacteria..

OpenStudy (abhisar):

And all those which have a membrane bound nucleus, like animal cells, plant cells are eukaryotic cells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay and how about the ones with and without the cell walls?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Even, Fungi is eukaryotic, Plasmodium the parasite which causes malaria is also eukaryote.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Animals don't have cell walls....and they are eukaryotes..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (abhisar):

|dw:1416070686972:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i don't know what protozo is but this picture you sent really helped me understand it better

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes, actually i don't know how much to tell you...like in which class are you ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Biology 1

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No i mean....what level ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ok..leave..i'll try to keep it basic..

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So, shall we move to organelles...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay and yes i know some like nucleus, chromosomes, mitochondria

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Ok, but before we move on tell me what is the difference between eukaryote and prokaryote..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay Eukoryatic cells is for any=imals and plants and fungi and protozo Prokaryotic is cells is for bacteria the cells is made up of atoms not one but many that form and make one huge cell; cells is the smallest thing in our body that functions by its cells are so small that you need them to be magnified to see them but the largest one that you can see with your own eyes without magnifying glass or anything is the ostrich egg.....am i missing anything else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and prokaryotic cells don't have a membrane bound nucleus

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes, that's the main difference !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Always mention the last point..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (abhisar):

k, now gv me 5 mins or 10 mins for my supper...i'll be back...untill then you can read organelles and endosymbiotic theory from ur book.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay enjoy your supper :) and thank you for helping me understand a little more :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

m back !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Let's see organelles..

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Like every city needs officers to run, The city of cell also have some officers whom we call organelle. Let's see some of them and their functions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oky

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Nucleus, this guy is the Mayor of cell, it controls every activity happening in the cell. It has DNA which has all the genetic information stored in it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so it is basically like if we were to say that the cell is a human will the nucleus be the brain?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now, you will learn one more difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Eukaryotes have membrane boun organelles like, Nucleus, Mitochondria, Chloroplast, Golgi complex, Endoplasmic Reticulum etc. Prokaryotes don't have membrane bound organelles.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes, nucleus will be the brain..good.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay doesn't the eukaryotic cell only have the DNA by the nucleoid ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Mitochondria is the power house of the cell. It's job is to produce energy by cellular respiration. It's job is to synthesize ATP (the energy molecule)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay doesn't it do that by using oxygen and breaking down food?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Prokaryotic cell has DNA inside nucleoid and Eukaryotic cell has DNA inside nucleus. Nucleus is membrane bound true organelle but nucleiod do not have a membrane..

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes, mitochondria produce energy by using oxygen and breaking down food. This is called cellular respiration.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i think im understanding this even better now

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Good, what's next ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe the lysosome?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ok, So these are also membrane bound organelle. This guy has hydrolytic enzymes (breaking down enzymes). They digest everything inside the cell which is unwanted.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hey, i found notes on this topic....it may help you..would you like to have it ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

It might be too detailed for you......i made this sometime back...so be carefull...don't get confused.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry my computer had to restart because i had a virus and it just got done scanning anyways thanks for the notes im going over them now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actuall the notes that you sent me are perfect THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH!!!!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Welcome ;)
