OpenStudy (taylev105):

Find a rational number and an irrational number that are between 5.2 and 5.5. Include the decimal approximation of the irrational number to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (igreen):

Rational numbers can be written as simple fractions, irrational numbers cannot.

OpenStudy (igreen):

Example of a rational number: \(10.3\) Example of an irrational number: \(\pi\)

OpenStudy (igreen):

So can you think of a rational number between 5.2 and 5.5? @Taylev105

OpenStudy (taylev105):

ok... I know the meaning I need help figuring out the q

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5.42374758921374598273408956238045728934583457208937458273645983745890273478623849758923475786345789023489056237805634785891780536872640178236478162816112378460187234812634876238746283465

:P

OpenStudy (taylev105):

:0

OpenStudy (igreen):

A decimal that goes on forever but does NOT repeat is one good example of an irrational number..so you can do that for here..

OpenStudy (taylev105):

ok sooooo

OpenStudy (taylev105):

5.4 is irrational whats rational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, 5.4 is rational...

OpenStudy (taylev105):

ok so whats irrational

OpenStudy (igreen):

5.4 is for rational..you can just make a really long decimal that goes on forever but doesn't repeat for the irrational.

OpenStudy (taylev105):

can you like explain this in a non math langege

OpenStudy (anonymous):

L3I

OpenStudy (taylev105):

?????

OpenStudy (igreen):

A decimal that doesn't repeat but goes on forever: 32.231239846810928375... Here's a decimal that REPEATS: 5.3333333333333333333...

OpenStudy (taylev105):

OK I KNOW THAT U KNOW WHAT IM DONE IM GETTING SOMEONE ELSE TO HELP ME

OpenStudy (anonymous):

O_O

OpenStudy (igreen):

You can just right 5.3 then tons of random numbers..

OpenStudy (igreen):

For the irrational one ^^

OpenStudy (taylev105):

@micahm

OpenStudy (taylev105):

I STILL DONT GE IT...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, for an irrational number, the number has to have an infinite amount of numbers, like this: 5.482043508723984570289347598... and so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For a rational number, it can be like 5.3, or 5.4. It can also be a repeating number, like 5.44444444444444... and so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Get it?

OpenStudy (micahm):

what the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find a rational number and an irrational number that are between 5.2 and 5.5. Include the decimal approximation of the irrational number to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (taylev105):

ok so 5.4 is irrational??

OpenStudy (conqueror):

No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, that would be rational. :)

OpenStudy (taylev105):

I quit lol im sooo confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An irrational number would be one that doesn't repeat, but it has infinite random numbers, like 5.428983471287349817238074612087365877634876187468071276487126487612378426184... and so on.

OpenStudy (micahm):

answer.com say 5.3 and √(28) ≈ 5.29

OpenStudy (taylev105):

???? lol ok whats the irrational one ??

OpenStudy (micahm):

answer.com says For the rational number, it's easy, just pick a number between the two given numbers: 5.4 For the irrational number, it will be a little trickier. I'll start with √2 and see what I need to multiply it by to get in the ballpark: √2 ≈ 1.414 Multiplying it by 4.5 we get: 4.5√2 ≈ 6.3640 (too high), let's try 4.0 4√2 ≈ 5.6569 (still too high, let's try 3.8 3.8√2 ≈ 5.3740 That is an irrational value in the range that you want.

OpenStudy (taylev105):

thank you soo much I get it a lot better :) so 5.3 is irrational???

OpenStudy (micahm):

yes
