OpenStudy (aripotta):

So I was a bit shocked to see this ad on the OpenStudy mobile app... Does OS choose which ads pop up?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

OMG seriously?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yea that really happened lol

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Ads are based off what you've searched...

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i've never searched anything like that

OpenStudy (aripotta):

and if it is based off google searches, why do i always get these annoying ads?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Wow...

OpenStudy (compassionate):

10,000 visitor!!!! You should've clicked it and claimed your prize!!! Those ads are different. They're not even really ads, more of a virus.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

there was a time when the only ads i saw were for colleges. why can't it be like that again?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use adblock. :3

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i have "Ads Removal" extension for Chrome but it doesn't really do its job lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First one.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

haha! it works :) thanks AMQ could i also have something like that on my phone? i use safari?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

and for the os app?

OpenStudy (philcua):

whoa that really popped up @AriPotta

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yea, it really did happen. i was just wondering if there was a way openstudy could monitor what ads pop up?? it's not a real big issue, i was just concerned with like 13 yr olds who go on there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

O_O OpenStudy....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha! wow...That's...interesting.....

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I know that with the Android app tool chain you can do this: http://www.google.com/ads/admob/ "\(\textbf{Robust ad filters.}\) More control so you can refine which ads appear in your apps, increase relevancy, and protect your brand." So it would not surprise me if iOS had the same thing.

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

I use adblock plus on firefox. It works like a dream. 0 ads, including on OS

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@StudyGurl14 This is on a phone.

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

but @AriPotta mentioned Chrome....so wouldn't she have the option of firefox?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

In reply to when AnswerMyQuestions brought up adblock... so you are not alone in having missed the part that this is for the mobile app.

OpenStudy (greencat):

Recently I was geting a whole bunch of college ads. So I changed my Google ad Settings. I get zero ads now.

OpenStudy (greencat):

In my gmail that is.

OpenStudy (greencat):

Nowadays I'm geting these weird vu lu or something ads in OS. And also some sign language thing.

OpenStudy (greencat):

I was going to take a lightshot... but it has innapropriate things. It is "im vu" and says "Find Your Bella". OS should remove the ad spaces.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

OS would have to shut down if it removed the ad spaces. It is how they pay for the servers. However, subscribers don't get the ads from what I understand. Also, the adsense ads and Google web ads do base off of things like search history, which brings up some odd adds when there is more than one person on the computer. So if the teen boy in the house searches for "hot girls" and the teen girl in the house searches for "designer bra panties" the end result can be ad selections that are of hot girls in underwear... On aps, this happens differently from what I have seen and the developers (for Android at least) have far more direct control of what ads are shown.

OpenStudy (greencat):

It only pops up once in a while. Usually everything is good and appropriate.

OpenStudy (greencat):

BTW Your example should probably be removed.

OpenStudy (perl):

bring this to the attention of Preetha please

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@GreenCat There is nothing wrong with the example. I did not use any offensive words, just a description of the basics. @perl As I pointed out, the web site based searches and what they do to ads is not in the control of the site. As for the app ads, I already emailed both Preetha and the dev team leader on this topic.

OpenStudy (perl):

@e.mccormick thankyou

OpenStudy (aripotta):

the first screenshot i posted was on the mobile app. however, i have encountered similar ads like that on here, the website. i had an ad once for an asian dating site??

OpenStudy (perl):

hmmm

OpenStudy (greencat):

OS should take control of the ads they choose.

OpenStudy (perl):

obviously they shouldn't have those, but they survive on ads . if more people would register and subscribe (10 dollars a month) we wouldn't have these ads.

OpenStudy (philcua):

I got this farmers dating ad on here too it cracks me up

OpenStudy (perl):

its cheaper than hiring a private tutor :)

OpenStudy (philcua):

Are you registered @perl

OpenStudy (perl):

i have asked maybe 3 questions, helped 2,000 questions

OpenStudy (philcua):

I was just asking but thats a waste of money on a website that kepps glitching out

OpenStudy (perl):

well, it could get better if more people subscribe :)

OpenStudy (perl):

@AriPotta thankyou for posting this feedback

OpenStudy (philcua):

I dont know people have been complaining about the issues for like a year now but nothing has changed

OpenStudy (perl):

@philcua can you post a separate feedback question and clearly write down all the glitches you experience. Thanks

OpenStudy (perl):

also mention which browser you are using, what kind of computer. all details help

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, they have been kicking around the idea of subscription levels too. Ways to make it cheaper. Keep the basics free, but have more features for more money. I have no clue if this will be implemented, but I like the idea. Also, I do agree that stability is a subscription drawback. People do not like to pay for something that breaks easy. Now, if subscribers got a month free for every 10 days of orange war... that might help make it less of an issue.

OpenStudy (natsent06):

I have heard that if u switch your apple device int airplane mode, the adds will disapeer from your apps

sammixboo (sammixboo):

This is interesting. I don't get any ads like these. I usually get some other weird ads about food and animals. Weird... But yeah that is a bit interesting

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Or some online game

OpenStudy (aripotta):

it's true that the ads go away when the phone is in airplane mode. but when it's in airplane mode, there's no internet connection and it won't connect to OS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wow......that sucks

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

That is a wierd ad...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Wow look at this ad @AriPotta http://prntscr.com/57s9qq And I don't search up anything like that...

OpenStudy (perl):

hmm, thats a sims ad?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

i guess...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I just got this ad... http://prntscr.com/57sdcg

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So life like... =P

OpenStudy (perl):

well thats not considered adult content, right?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Do they also sell, "Band Barbie with Skipper on drims!" ?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Now this is a better ad. http://prntscr.com/57sf5c

OpenStudy (perl):

yes , thats ok

OpenStudy (perl):

our society today is bombarded with 'adult content'-ish advertising

OpenStudy (perl):

boring ads are ok :)

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

ikr

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

It can be exciting too... just wish they had better tools to filter adult and things that lean that direction. A way to kill dating sites would be nice.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, just meas they make less money ahd have more problems funding the site.

OpenStudy (greencat):

Most of the time there are good ads. But, pretty often a bad ad randomly appears.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got one ad that had penguin "Chicken" Nuggets.

OpenStudy (greencat):

One of the ads that @TheSmartOne got is the "im vu" ad I was talking about.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

As a social networking site, im vu has lots of ads that will pop up on another social networking site.

OpenStudy (greencat):

OpenStudy should be an educational (not social networking) website. That way, it would give ads like "IXL" (I think that's the name).
